OSSEDI HANDS OVER TWO CLASSROOM BLOCKS IN T/A KABUDULA IN LILONGWE DISTRICT.

The Organization for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development Initiative (OSSEDI Malawi) on Friday,26 August, 2022 handed over two classroom blocks at Mchengaowiza and Chisanja Primary Schools in the area of Traditional Authority Kabudula in Lilongwe District. The two classroom blocks, which have also been furnished with desks, cost K60 million each.  The Guest of Honor at the handover function was Honorable Monica Chang’anamuno, Deputy Minister of Education.

Desks in the classrooms

According to the Minister, availability of adequate classrooms is in line with the National Education Sector Investment Plan’s (NESIP 2020 – 2030) main objective for the primary sub-sector of improving equitable access to quality learning for all children in primary education, regardless of their physical, geographical, economic and religious affiliations.

The Deputy Minister also disclosed that Government is constructing additional classrooms countrywide to ensure improved learning environment for learners and is also constructing teachers houses in remote schools to provide better accommodation for teachers and ensuring retention of more teachers in remote schools. She disclosed that among other initiatives, her Ministry under the Malawi Education Reform Program (MERP) will construct 10,900 cost effective classrooms and 1,000 sanitation blocks in 3,553 of the 5,806 public primary schools.

Hon. Chang’anamuno unveiling the blocks with OSSEDI Chaipereson, Chrissy Mbundungu.

Taking her turn, Chairperson for OSSEDI Malawi, Chrissy Mbundungu pledged continued support from her organization to the education sector especially knowing that Government cannot manage to deliver all development initiatives alone. In this case, NGOs come in to compliment Government’s efforts to achieve intended Malawi 2063 Agenda. She also pleaded with the community and the students to take good care of the classroom blocks to show their ownership and appreciation.

The Council for NGOs in Malawi (CONGOMA), which was represented by Mrs. Mphatso Jezman, appealed to Government through the Ministry of Education to facilitate tax waivers for developmental materials by NGOs so that they can do more, a thing which the Deputy Minister said Government is already doing and is available to assist where there are challenges. This is a good development especially looking at the rising cost of materials on the market. This will ease the NGO budgets so as to create more developmental projects than spending more on taxes.

CONGOMA also pleaded with parents of T/A Kabudula to send their children to school in large numbers because it’s their right to access education.
